New York City

In response to the devastating Supreme Court decision in United States v. Skrmetti to uphold bans on transgender health care for minors, the New York City Council LGBTQIA+ Caucus Chairs Council Members Tiffany Cabán and Erik Bottcher released the following joint statement:

“The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth is a devastating attack on basic human rights and bodily autonomy.

The Supreme Court cannot erase transgender people from existence. Transgender lives are not up for debate. Gender affirming care is lifesaving care. Let us be clear: we will always support the transgender community. We will not back down because hateful bigots want to set them up as scapegoats. We will not let members of our community be villainized and demonized for who they are. We will always defend our transgender and gender non conforming neighbors.

This is exactly why we passed the Trans Futures Package in April, which turned New York City into a “safe harbor” for patients seeking gender affirming care, protecting them from lawsuits by conservative governments or entities.

Trans people belong. Trans youth deserve to grow up safe, healthy, and free—and we will keep working every day to make that a reality.”
