Council Member Tiffany Cabán Statement on Zohran Mamdani’s Historic Primary Win

My colleague and comrade Zohran Mamdani and the people of New York just delivered a historic win for our city, our future, and the world.

Since Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s victory in 2018, and with many more socialist leaders elected since, we’ve boldly grown the democratic socialist movement in New York City, not quietly or cautiously, but with joy and conviction.

Zohran’s campaign has been nothing short of incredible: one in every 200 New Yorkers volunteered, 1.5 million doors were knocked. This was a bold, disciplined campaign rooted in working-class power – and it paid off.

This victory reflects years of organizing, strategizing, striking, and community-building. And it shows! We’re not just winning elections, we’re shifting what’s politically possible.

New Yorkers are hungry for a politics rooted in joy, justice, and solidarity. Democratic socialism isn’t a dream. It’s the real, practical answer to the crises we face.

This is a pivotal moment. With authoritarianism on the rise and systems failing our communities, the only force strong enough to fight back is an organized, multiracial working class. That’s what we’re building – in our chapters and neighborhoods, and at the ballot box.

Let’s keep going. Let’s build a New York for all of us.
