Amazon’s Last Mile Exploitation is the Last Straw for NYC: Council Member Cabán Announces New Law to Protect Workers Alongside Teamsters

September 8, 2025

New York City

After Amazon unlawfully fired 105 “Last Mile” warehouse and delivery workers, Council Member Tiffany Cabán rallied with the Teamsters in front of Amazon Warehouse DBK4 and made the following statement announcing new legislation to hold Amazon accountable, protect Amazon workers, and keep New York City safe and healthy:

“Two weeks ago, 105 New Yorkers lost their jobs overnight because Amazon insists that even though these New Yorkers work in Amazon warehouses, wear Amazon vests, drive Amazon vans, and deliver Amazon packages, they don’t work for Amazon.

That’s why I am introducing legislation to protect Last Mile warehouse and delivery workers. No more hiding behind fake shell companies and “independent subcontractors.”
This bill exists because workers organized, struck, and demanded justice. Our job as elected leaders is to turn that fight into law.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said power is the ability to make the richest company in the world stop in its tracks and do what it doesn’t want to do. In his day, it was General Motors. Today, it’s Amazon.

Amazon is exploiting workers, making our streets and city less safe, and ducking all responsibility.

New York City is not a billionaire’s playground. If Amazon wants to do business here, it must treat workers and our communities with dignity and respect. We are building a city where no corporation is king and every New Yorker can thrive.

On September 25 at 12PM we will rally with the Teamsters and our allies on the steps of City Hall to celebrate the bill's introduction.”
